B and I just watched the first episode of The Hour season 2 last night! The rest of it has already aired but that will not stop me from posting about my hopes and dreams.

spoilers I guess )

Looking forward to watching the rest over the next few weeks! B and I are also slowly making our way through season 1 of Warehouse 13 (pretty boring so far?) and recently started a Community rewatch (still awesome). We watch new episodes of Parks and Rec and wish there were more of them.

I like the characters on Elementary but am not in love with it as a show. I watch it alone. I've left off watching The Good Wife, Scandal, and Homeland but will probably get back to them someday. I still don't like and haven't finished watching Teen Wolf.

Season five of Merlin has been sort of crushingly disappointing for me, and I'm probably less emotionally engaged with it than I have been since... early 2009, I guess, when I was watching season 1 for the first time and before I'd jumped into the fandom. Still, I don't know what I will do with myself once it's over. D: D:

I feel good about the things I've been accomplishing in fandom lately! On Sunday I posted one of my longest Merlin fics and submitted my [community profile] podficbigbang project - posting for that should start very soon. I doubt I'll ever take on a podfic this large again, but it's been a good experience, and one nice effect is that now I can look at a 10K fic and thing, pshaw, that's nothing. In fact, I recorded one that's a little under 9K yesterday and am hoping to finish the edits and post it today. With that I will have only one square left to fill on my kink_bingo card before the June 15th Amnesty deadline. That square is guns, and I would like to fill it with a podfic, fic, or poem about a character with a disability. I would be grateful for podficcable story recs or writing prompts! You can also help out other people who are trying to meet their amnesty goals over at the Amnesty Boogaloo reverse promptfest at the comm.

[livejournal.com profile] summerpornathon signups are open!!! Closing Thursday night! I hope lots of my friends will sign up, though to be honest I also have some hope that we might have a slightly smaller group this year, which would make teams more intimate and reading more manageable. Super excited for the reading and writing, not so much for the pages full of flashing gifs but what are ya gonna do. :)

Lots of activity planned for International Day of Femslash coming up on July 14th! It would be neat if we got a ton of femslash at the pornathon that week, though it would be better if we got a ton of femslash at the pornathon every week. :D

You guys, I am so happy with what I've gotten for Purimgifts! Three Avatar ficlets and three graphics with so many of my favorite things, including both thoughtful character-focused genfic and an explicit kinky threesome!
-The Moon and the Ocean, Katara and Yue gen
-An Ounce of Blood, gen about wee!Mai and her uncle the Warden
-'Bending, Katara/Mai/Zuko!!!

There is also moar Avatar fic!

Here are a few other fics I've enjoyed:

-The Jewish!Lestrade series - Sherlock (BBC): Sherlock/Lestrade with Jewish!Lestrade! Smart and funny and nicely achy in parts.

-Ten to One, part 1, part 2, and part 3 - Doctor Who: the Doctor/Queen Elizabeth I with Liz Ten! So clever and fun but also with some angst! I love the character voices in this.

-Tickle Me Ink - Harry Potter: Hermione/Luna with writing on the body.

There are also about a hundred other fandoms, with a few more fics going up soon! Please post recs if you got 'em. I've had some trouble navigating the collection on the AO3 so I'd really appreciate extra pointers.

Speaking of cool collections on the AO3, a friend recently pointed out hetnotstraight and I was happy because I was able to add several stories that fit, that is, het fics where at least one of the characters is not straight. I have also bookmarked a few to read.

[personal profile] havocthecat is thinking about running a multifandom femslash challenge, either mini-big bang or a remix! What would I like more than a femslash remix? Not very many things! I told her that I have already twice remixed non-femslash fics into femslash remixes, I've needed this so much in my life. Go vote for the remix in the poll at [community profile] girlgay and give her your thoughts!

ETA: Look at [personal profile] frigg's new Gwen/Merlin art, Rosebud with a flush! Winged messengers omg! His suit!

Here are some links to things you have probably seen already if you are interested in these kinds of things! Oh well, I will feel better if I also have them here!

-Fanart: Guinevere of Rohan by [livejournal.com profile] felix_aeternus!

-Make Something Good by [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain, the Gwen-centric OT3 (Arthur/Gwen/Merlin) vid we've been waiting for! Oh my lovely thoughtful people with their significant looks! ♥!!

-All We Have, a beautiful Treme vid by [livejournal.com profile] hersluck focusing on the show's main female characters. Also in comments heresluck linked to this article in The Nation, Katrina Is Not a Metaphor by Melissa Harris-Lacewell.

-Meta: Neoliberal Holmes, or, Everything I Know About Modern Life I Learned from Sherlock by [personal profile] magnetic_pole. I found this uncomfortable to read but very much worth reading through to the end.

-There's been some good discussion in the comments to [livejournal.com profile] heather's post linking to some of these same things about how the issues Maggie's talking about with Sherlock come up in Merlin and some other shows.

-I haven't felt up to watching [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain and [livejournal.com profile] sisabet's new multifandom torture vid On the Prowl yet, but [personal profile] giandujakiss has an interesting post comparing it to Women's Work and talking about some related issues of the meanings of men's pain versus women's pain in our media - more relevant comments on the LJ side than Dreamwidth, last time I checked. (Remember a couple months ago when we were talking here about female woobies?)

-Oh heck, have an MP3: This Is a Rebel Song by SinĂ©ad O'Connor, from the LP Gospel Oak, 1997. It's not one of my favorite songs of hers but I've been listening to it and singing it a lot for the last couple days so I feel like sharing. cut for Feelings about Sherlock )

-The philosophy of squee by [livejournal.com profile] cherrybina. I feel a little bit funny about linking to these things together because Maggie and the folks at Heather's post are all, "Let's problematize these shows we want to love!" and Bina's talking about Merlin fandom being her happy place. But I love what Bina's saying about there being room in fandom for us to find what I ourselves and our people. I love seeing her squee about how hot Arthur and Merlin are on my f-list and I also love seeing someone like Maggie or [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz nail down just what that niggling feeling was when I was watching that last episode of Sherlock or Merlin or Doctor Who. (And also I'm with Bina about avoiding anon memes because eeep.)

Merlin challenges

-[personal profile] lilian_cho and [personal profile] netgirl_y2k are helping me run [personal profile] camelotremix, and signups are going well! I mean, slowly, but we don't need to have a huge number of people, and also I know of a few people who are working on getting their fic listings organized and planning to sign up later. We have some AWESOME writers already though, and other awesome folks who have decided the challenge isn't for them but who are posting about it and spreading the word anyway. Also [livejournal.com profile] mrs_leary made us some banners so we can start using those as soon as I can figure out the coding. :) Thank you, you guys! I am really happy about this!

-[livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice is going to run again! I'll be sitting out this round but yay for more Merlin fic and art! Lots of people should sign up!

-I am seriously considering signing up for [livejournal.com profile] merlinfemfest! On the one hand, the next few months will be busy between remix modding and serious rl stuffs. On the other hand, Merlin femslash! And again, lots of awesome people's signing up! Makes me want to join in! What do you think?

Ambivalent feelings about fests and timing )

-[livejournal.com profile] kinkelot is having a tentacles challenge! I think Merlin is a challenging fandom for bringing in tentacles (not like The Faculty or Star Trek or something) but people have managed it and I hope there will be more soon.

-Eeep only three more weeks until the main deadline for [community profile] kink_bingo! (Okay I know it's not a Merlin challenge but I'm writing Merlin fic for it so.) Besides writing I need to get back into podficcing. I've filled a bunch of squares already but I'll be sad if I don't make a bingo.

Other stuff

-Take Me Home by [personal profile] such_heights has all my favorite femslash ships in one happy vid! Suitable for dancing! (Hey [personal profile] gamerchick I think you would enjoy this!)

-Old Spice Man/Merlin parody or fusion or something by [livejournal.com profile] villainny. Hee!

-I watched episodes 2 and 3 of Sherlock and continued to think they were well done and clever and that Sherlock was really disturbingly hot, and yet I had to sort of put a lot of my politics/ideas aside in order to enjoy the old school slashy vibe, and that was a weird feeling. So I'm okay with the show being over for now.

-I watched the movie Murderball and concur with [personal profile] gamerchick's post about it: it is neat to see a movie about people with disabilities that doesn't follow a traditional script of brave souls overcoming adversity in an inspiring way. This is a movie about badass athletes who do wheelchair rugby and it's, like, not my favorite kind of movie in that I'm not into contact sports or movies about guys being assholes, as some of these guys were, and yet there were parts of this that were awesome and the whole thing kept my interest and I mostly liked it.

-Some other things I have watched/am watching and will talk about in comments if you ask me to: Treme season 1 (♥ ♥), The Wire season 1, half of Legend of the Seeker season 2, most of Leverage season 3, the first two episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Inception (twice).
sophinisba: Wee Gwen admires wee Merlin's magic! (gwen merlin by el_jamon)
I really enjoyed the first part of the new BBC miniseries Sherlock! Mini-spoilers and a question for more serious fans )

In other news, I have more carrots than I know what to do with. (I'm going through one of those phases where I try to be a responsible consumer who buys locally grown vegetables and all that, but I'm not very good at following through, you see, and tend to give in and order a pizza after a few days...) Can anyone point me towards a ridiculously easy but delicious carrot cake recipe? What are your other favorite things to do with carrots?

Thanks in advance, f-listers, you are awesome!

I've been having a really nice week. I've been blowing off exercise (eh, the gym is closed and it's too cold to run outside) and rl work (eh, no excuse there), staying at home and throwing myself into some fun fannish projects. I started a new Merlin fic on Monday and another one yesterday and have been writing a ton on both. \o/ I haven't posted anything new but I've had new comments on a few older fics that made me feel really good. I've been archiving my old fics at the Archive of Our Own and exchanging e-mails to brainstorm for a small fic and art fest to be held at [community profile] camelot_fleet next month.

I finally finished watching Noah's Arc on Netflix instant viewing a few days ago. I liked the movie a little less than most of the episodes because (skip) of all the relationship/infidelity angst and because I was disappointed that Junito wasn't in it and that Noah ended up with Wade, who I still think is an asshole. I did like the part with Wade's mom though, and Chance's student Brandon was a cutie. It was still fun and I think I might request Alex fic for Yuletide next year.

On Tuesday I went out to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie and I liked it pretty well, though not as much as I'd hoped. Comments on style and characters but no real spoilers )

I thought uploading my fic at the AO3 would be really tedious but it's mostly been easy and occasionally fun - I like skimming my old fics and deciding on tags for them. lots of AO3 talk )

Speaking of LotR, [personal profile] franzeska commented on the Dreamwidth side of the Fanlore post I did a couple weeks ago to ask whether I remembered the vampire hobbits fad from a few years back, and I had to say no, I think it was before my time. Does anyone else remember who the authors were, when that happened and where they got archived?
